The First Impressions Strategy Team, in collaborate with many others, is leading an initiative to connect college students with our regional community. Several initiatives are already in place to connect with local businesses for internships and mentorships; however, we need to do a better job “selling our community” as a great place to live and play, as well as work. Studies increasing point to the fact that college graduates are first choosing WHERE to live, then finding employment in that community. Unfortunately, we can each relate a story or two about graduates who barely left campus or the East Lansing bar scene during their four-year academic career. Most students simply have no knowledge of what the Greater Lansing region has to offer.
The First Impressions Strategy Team is currently connecting with folks who serve as “touch points” within the student body at Michigan State University, Lansing Community College, Cooley Law School, and elsewhere, at a time when they’re thinking about their future – admissions, career services, student life, etc. We don’t want to duplicate efforts, but rather are trying to enhance existing initiatives to connect students with the Greater Lansing community.

Wayfinding Project Update

Both the Placemaking and First Impressions committees have identified Wayfinding as a future project. The teams have decided to collaborate to complete this initiative.
Why is Wayfinding Important?
Urban planner Kevin A. Lynch borrowed the term for his 1960 book Image of the City, where he defined wayfinding as “a consistent use and organization of definite sensory cues from the external environment”. In short, it tells us how to get there. Although numerous studies have shown the importance of good signage and wayfinding to navigate downtowns, one must only look as far as a poorly marked one-way street or remember when they repeatedly missed 'that street'. Especially for visitors and tourists, good signage can help people make good decisions and 'get there' safely.
Previous Work
In 2002, the City of Lansing began working to improve wayfinding and signage within the city. You can view a copy of this plan here. These plans detail the type of signs, their location, and other specifics that you would need to roll out a comprehensive wayfinding plan.
The second half of wayfinding, after the plan is finished, is in implementation and maintenance. Elements of this plan were scaled back or eliminated due to budgeting issues since 2002, and given the lack of a regional comprehensive wayfinding and signage plan, it's time to look for better options.
NEXT Steps
Working with neighboring municipalities in the core urban area of Greater Lansing, members of the Placemaking and First Impressions Action Teams have proposed the creation of a regional signage and wayfinding plan, and to find innovative and sustainable ways to fund its implementation and maintenance. It is more cost effective to broaden the scope of the project and split the fixed costs associated with its rollout - it may be too expensive to tackle alone, but if we pool our resources, we can do it.
In the coming weeks, Leap staff will be meeting with planners, public officials, private developers, business owners, and others to build the coalition necessary to carry out this task. If you would like to know more or contribute, please contact Joe Manzella at ManzellaJ@GLNext.com.

The IFS Cluster is quickly growing legs and will soon be completely up and running. Jamie Hess, Education Consultant, Office of Career and Technical Education of State of Michigan is working with the IFS members to help develop a new finance curriculum in Michigan schools. The Education Workgroup is starting to work on a regional asset map of resources, indentifying skill gaps, and connecting academic programs to business needs. The IFS has continued discussion with both MSU and Olivet College to build a career path to the insurance/finance sector. This would include developing short-term courses and certifications in the insurance /banking cluster and to develop talent in these industries. The Marketing Workgroup is developing a positive, strategic, industry-wide message addressing the assets and value of the IFS Cluster to the region, including the strength of the industry; job opportunities; and innovative leadership.

It doesn't take long to find great national press and top ten rankings about the Greater Lansing community. In fact, the community and businesses within it, have been highlighted in Inc., Entrepreneur magazine, Kiplinger, and several other business news outlets in the past year alone. It's no mistake, however, that this praise follows a great dipping point in our local economy. The Greater Lansing community merely went back to what made us great to begin with: Innovation. The region is moving forward and we have all of the tools in place to make this the next great century in Greater Lansing.
