Working with neighboring municipalities in the core urban area of Greater Lansing, members of the Placemaking and First Impressions Action Teams have proposed the creation of a regional signage and wayfinding plan, and to find innovative and sustainable ways to fund its implementation and maintenance. It is more cost effective to broaden the scope of the project and split the fixed costs associated with its rollout - it may be too expensive to tackle alone, but pooled resources will lessen the burden of fixed costs.
Corbin, a consulting firm that specializes in this type of planning, presented strategies to the group for building a coalition, identifying funding, and proceeding with the implementation of a regional Wayfinding Plan.
A comprehensive regional wayfinding and signage plan is an important component of an integrated regional approach to tourism and visitors. Visual, on-street queues lead visitors to attractions by making paths clear, facilitating a good experience and a feeling of safety. As an example, good wayfinding and signage will help visitors find attractions like the Lansing City Market or Wharton Center with minimal effort and chance of becoming lost. While signage and wayfinding are not sufficient alone to increase tourism, they are a necessary component of a comprehensive welcoming plan for visitors.
